How to Back Up a Garmin Nuvi

by Benjamin Aries

The Garmin Nuvi is a popular brand of automotive GPS. There are several varieties of Nuvi, and the device is available with different screen sizes and features. All Nuvis use color touchscreen displays to show a moving road map and are designed specifically for drivers. Nuvi owners can save favorite locations and frequently used addresses on the device. A USB transfer cable can also be used to back up these preferences to either a Mac or Windows computer.

Using a PC

Plug the USB transfer cable into the port on the GPS. Connect the opposite end to the computer. Click the Windows "Start" button and click "Computer."

Locate the Garmin device in the "Computer" window. Right-click on the Garmin icon and select "Open."

Open the folder labelled "GPX." If it is not listed, open either the "Garmin" or "Internal Storage" folder to reveal the "GPX" sub-folder. The exact folder location can vary depending on the Garmin Nuvi model.

Right-click on the file named "Current.gpx." Select "Copy." Open the Windows desktop and right-click on a blank area of the screen. Click "Paste." The GPX file containing the Nuvi's data will be transferred to the Windows desktop.

Using a Mac

Connect the USB transfer cable to the GPS and plug the cable into a free USB port on the computer. Wait for the Garmin Nuvi device to appear on the desktop. Double-click on the Garmin icon.

Locate and open the folder marked "GPX." If it is not listed, open the "Garmin" folder to find the "GPX" sub-folder. The exact folder location may vary depending on the Garmin Nuvi model.

Right-click on the file named "Current.gpx." Click "Copy." Return to the Mac desktop, right-click and select "Paste." Wait for the GPX file to transfer to the desktop for safekeeping.

Tip

  • To restore a saved GPX file to the Nuvi, reverse the above steps. Copy the "Current.gpx" file from the desktop and paste it into the Garmin's folder. Note that this will override any addresses or favorites on the Nuvi.
