How Can I Block Someone From Calling & Texting Me?

by Mindi Orth

Most cellular service providers allow you to block incoming calls and text messages from a specific phone number. By adding specific contact information to a list you manage, you can add or remove numbers to your block list at any time. Typically, you can gain access to this list from your online account. Some providers offer this service free of charge; others require you to pay a monthly subscription fee.

Verizon Wireless

Go to Verizon's website, click “Sign In/Register” and enter your username and password to log on to your MyVerizon user account. If you don’t have an online account, follow the onscreen instructions to register for one. You will need your account number to do this.

Click “My Verizon,” then click the “Manage Verizon Safeguards” option found under My Plans and Services.

Click “View Details and Edit,” then click the “Add Blocks” option.

Click “Add Blocked Contacts," then select “Add Blocks” and choose how you want to program the block. Select “Name, Contact Info and Contact Type” to block calls according to the information you program. Other options include Block Restricted, Unavailable and Private Numbers, which automatically prevents you from receiving calls received from blocked callers and Block Outgoing 411 Directory Assistance Calls.

Enter the name and phone number of the person you want to block. Include the area code, but do not use hyphens when entering the phone number. Click “Add” to add the contact to your blocked list.

AT&T Wireless

Go to the AT&T Wireless website and log into your user account. If you don’t have an online account, follow the onscreen instructions to register for one. You will need your account number to do this.

Subscribe to AT&T Smart Limits for Wireless, if you don’t have an existing subscription. Click “MyAT&T” and then click the “Add or Change Services” options from the Wireless menu. Select “Smart Limits for Wireless Parental Controls” followed by “Next.” Follow the onscreen prompts to confirm the subscription. As of the date of publication, AT&T charges $4.99 per month for this service.

Click the “Smart Limits for Wireless” option from the Wireless menu.

Click “Blocked Numbers” and then type the phone number you want to block into the Add New field. Include the area code when entering the number.

Click “Submit” to save your entry. The number now appears in the list of blocked numbers. You will no longer receive phone calls or text messages sent from this number.

Sprint

Navigate to Sprint's website, then log into your user account. If you don’t have an online account, follow the onscreen instructions to register for one. You will need your account number to do this.

Click “My Preferences,” then click the “Block Voice” option.

Select the “Block Only the Following Phone Numbers for Inbound and Outbound Calls” option and then enter the phone number you want to block. Click “Add Number” to add the number to your block list and then click “Save” to save your changes.

Create a text message that reads “Block” followed by the phone number you want to block. Include the area code, but don’t include any hyphens. Send the text to 99999 to block the number.
