How to Import My Itineraries to TomTom

by Benjamin Aries

TomTom is a popular brand of vehicle GPS unit. One feature of this navigation system is the ability to import an itinerary file from a computer. This itinerary is sometimes known as a Point of Interest file. A list of several locations is contained in this file and a driver can navigate between the points. Several websites allow you to create, edit and save an itinerary. A standard USB transfer cable is used to move the itinerary to the TomTom GPS.

Using POE Editor

Access the POE Editor website (see "Resources). Click the "Add Point" button. Enter a title for the first point of the itinerary in the "Name" field. Type a zip code or street location in the area labeled "Address." Press "Lookup."

Click and drag the point marker on the map to indicate the exact geographic location you wish to add. Press "Save Point" to add the location to the itinerary.

Press "Add Point" again. Repeat the steps to add as many points as needed. Click the "minus" button next to a point to remove it. When the itinerary is complete, press "Save POI File."

Type a label for the new itinerary in the "Name" field. Choose "Tomtom .ov2" from the "File Type" list. Press "Download POI." Choose a location on the computer and press "Save."

Open the computer folder that contains the newly downloaded itinerary. Select the "Tomtom .ov2" file and click the "Edit" menu. Click "Copy."

Connect the TomTom GPS to the computer using a USB transfer cable. Turn on the GPS. Close the TomTom Home window if this program launches automatically. Open "My Computer."

Double-click on the "TomTom" device. Locate and open the folder on the TomTom that holds the map files. The exact location may vary depending on the TomTom model. The map folder should contain text such as "United States" or "Great_Britain-Map."

Click the "Edit" menu and select "Paste." The "Tomtom .ov2" file transfers to the map folder. Disconnect the TomTom from the USB connection.

Press the "Preference" button from the main screen of the TomTom. Select "Change Preferences" and "Manage POI." Tap "Enable / Disable POI" and choose the new itinerary. Press "Done."

Using MyRouteOnline

Browse to the MyRouteOnline website (see "Resources"). Click "Manually enter your addresses." Select "Plan my route."

Select the "Title" field. Enter a name for the first point in the itinerary. Type a location in the "Address" field and press the "Tab" key. The point appears on the map. Click and drag the map marker to adjust the location of the point, if needed.

Repeat the previous steps to add multiple titles and addresses to the itinerary list. When the itinerary is complete, press "Plan My Route." Wait for the route to complete and press "OK."

Press the "Send Email & Directions" button. Type your email address in the corresponding field. Select "TomTom" from the "Attachments" drop-down list. Press "Send Email."

Check your email and open the new message from MyRouteOnline. Click on the file attachment, which contains the itinerary. Download and save the attachment to a location on the computer.

Connect the TomTom GPS device to the computer using a USB transfer cable. Open "My Computer" and locate the saved itinerary file. Select the file and click "Edit," then "Copy."

Double-click on the TomTom device listed under My Computer. Open the map folder, which will be labeled with "United States" or another country name. Select "Edit" and "Paste." Wait for the itinerary file to transfer to the TomTom.

Disconnect the TomTom from the USB connection. Press the "Preference" button from the main screen of the TomTom. Select "Change Preferences" and "Manage POI." Tap "Enable / Disable POI" and choose the new itinerary. Press "Done."
