How to Install Avast Antivirus in Ubuntu Intrepid

by Randall Blackburn

Though Linux-based computers are rarely affected with viruses or malware, Avast Antivirus is available for Linux operating systems such as Ubuntu Intrepid. Running Avast through Ubuntu is very useful if you run Windows programs with Wine from inside the Ubuntu operating system. You can scan your hard drives for viruses and malware without booting into Windows.

Open a Web browser in Ubuntu Intrepid and navigate to the Avast download site (link in Resources).

Click the “Save” or “Save As" option and then save the DEB file to your desktop.

Double-click the DEB file. The file opens with the Ubuntu Software Center application’s Installation dialog box.

Click the “Install” button on the right side of the Installation dialog box. The software installs to the operating system and a notification appears indicating that the installation is finished. The “Install” button is replaced by the “Remove” button and the Registration form opens.

Complete the “Registration” form with your name and email address. You will receive the Avast activation key in an email to the address you specify. Click “Submit.” Avast is now installed.
