How to Find a Printer's IP Address

by Gissimee Doe

The IP address of a printer uniquely identifies it and allows other networked machines to communicate with it. You might need to determine a printer’s IP address for a number of reasons, such as if you’re trying to connect to it from a computer on your network or if you keep an equipment inventory for insurance purposes. Finding the IP address of a printer is fairly straightforward and can be done from a computer connected to the same network as the printer or to which it is directly connected.

Onboard Display

Press the “Menu” button on the printer if it has an onboard display.

Scroll through the menu options on the display using the menu button or arrow keys, depending on your printer, until you find a “Setup” or “Configuration” option.

Scroll through the list of available setup options using the printer’s navigation system (buttons or arrow keys) until you locate the IP address or “TCP/IP” option. Select this option to view the IP address on the printer’s onboard display.

Windows Configuration

Click the “Start” button and choose "Devices and Printers" to open the printer configuration window listing all accessible printers.

Locate the printer whose IP address you’re trying to find from the list of displayed printers. Right-click the printer and choose “Printer Properties.” The IP address is sometimes displayed in the Locations box on the General tab. If it isn’t, go to the next step.

Click the “Ports” tab on the Properties window. Widen the “Port” column of the table displayed in the window by dragging the column’s border to the right. The IP address of the printer might be displayed on the port listing. If it isn’t, go to the next step.

Click the “Configure Port” button. If the IP address is not displayed in the main window, click the “System Info” tab if one is available. The IP address is usually displayed beside the “DLL” label.
