How to Put a Movie on an iPad

by Benjamin Aries

The Apple iPad was introduced in 2010 and enables you to view media using an interactive touchscreen display. The bundled program called Apple iTunes allows you to purchase movies to view on the iPad. However, home videos from digital cameras and camcorders are not always compatible with the device. Free software is available to convert homemade videos to an iPad-friendly format. The videos can then be transferred onto the tablet using the iTunes program.

Convert the Video

Download the "Free iPad Converter Software" (see "Resources"). Alternatively, download a similar conversion program from a reputable download source such as CNet's

Launch the conversion software on the home computer. Click the "Profile" drop-down menu. Select "iPad video" from the list. Choose one of the listed video qualities. For best results, click "iPad HD Video."

Click the "New Task" button. Use the dialog box to select a video file on the computer. To convert multiple videos, hold down the "Ctrl" key and select the computer files.

Press the "Convert" button to start the conversion. Wait for this process to finish before closing the window.

Transfer to iPad

Launch the Apple iTunes software on the computer. Select the "Movies" section, located under "Library."

Click "File" and choose "Add to Library." Select the converted video file that was created in the previous steps.

Connect the iPad to the computer using the USB transfer cable. The iTunes software will automatically detect the device and synchronize the added files.
