The iPhone doesn't have default options installed for recovering a deleted text message.

Once you have deleted a text message, it is usually gone. However, you can recover deleted text messages through a few different ways on your iPhone: You can restore your iPhone to an earlier backup on iTunes that still had the text message, or you can use a software option. Restoring your iPhone to earlier backups will mean deleting more recent messages, photos and other changes. Software options can access your iTunes backups to recover SMS messages, or they can access messages that have been deleted but not yet overwritten.

Restore your iPhone to a Previous Backup

Launch iTunes.

Disable your iPhone from syncing automatically before connecting your device with your computer. On a PC, click "Edit," then "Settings." In the window that opens, choose "Devices," and check the box "Prevent iPods, iPhones, and iPads from syncing automatically."

Plug your iPhone into your computer using the USB cord.

Right click your iPhone in the devices list, and click "Restore from Backup."

Click the backup in which the text is saved, highlight it and click the "OK" button.

Software Text Recovery Options

Recover your deleted text messages with Data Recovery for iTunes by Wondershare (see Resources). It is a software product for use with Mac machines and recovers deleted contacts and photos as well as messages. It allows you to recover the information from previous backups without deleting the more current information already on your iPhone. You can also install Data Recovery for iTunes after you have deleted the text message you want to recover. As of October 2012, there is a free trial version available for download or you can purchase the full version for $59.95.

Recover a deleted text message using a Windows 7 operating system using Dr. Fone by Wondershare (see Resources). Dr. Fone has two ways of recovering text messages: You can either recover deleted items directly from the phone or from the iTunes backups of your iPhone. Dr. Fone allows you to recover any deleted photos, contacts, notes and reminders as well as messages. As of October 2012, Dr. Fone has a free trial version, or you can purchase it for $99.95.

Recover your deleted text messages using Decipher TextMessage using a Mac or a Windows operation system (see Resources). Plug your iPhone into your computer and allow Decipher TextMessage to examine your iPhone and recover any text messages it can. If a text message has been deleted on your iPhone, it is only marked as deleted until the data from it has been overwritten. So long as you use Decipher TextMessage before the data has been overwritten, you can recover the text message. Decipher TextMessage works on Windows XP and later versions. As of October 2012, there is a free trial download or you can purchase the full version for $19.99.
