Does the Samsung Fascinate Android Phone on Verizon Wireless Have a Front Facing Camera?

When buying a smartphone, you must consider what you intend to do with it. For example, if you are a big fan of video chats and self-portraits, you'll want to find a phone with a front-facing camera. If this is the case, you'll want to avoid the Samsung Fascinate. It has an HD quality camera, but only a rear facing one.

The Fascinate Camera

The Samsung Fascinate is equipped with a five megapixel camera with a 4x digital zoom. The camera is also capably of capturing video in 720p definition. Though it isn't front facing, it is more than capable of shooting high quality photographs and videos to document you daily adventures.

It Looks Like a Camera

There are two small openings on the top-left corner of the phone that many users confuse for a front-facing camera. One of those openings is for an ambient light sensor that can dim or brighten the screen depending on the amount of light it detects. The second opening is a proximity sensor that can tell when you place the phone to your ear. It triggers the lock so that you don't accidentally press buttons on the touch screen with your ear or face. Both are very useful, but not for snapping pictures.

Simple Workaround

If you've already got a Fascinate and you need the function of a forward-facing camera, you can work around the issue using some creativity. Simply place a mirror in front of you, turn your phone around and view the screen in the mirror to focus and properly line up your shot. Once you're well centered in the frame, look at the camera on the back of your phone and press the shutter button. In the end you'll have a well framed photo or video of yourself without the use of additional equipment.

Other Options

If you are considering the purchase of a Fascinate and the forward-facing camera is a deal breaker, there are other Android smartphones in a similar price range that have the camera you're looking for. Take a look at the HTC EVO V 4G or the LG Marquee. Both are close in price to the Samsung Fascinate and have similar features.
