Skype allows you to voice call virtually anywhere in the world to connect to friends and colleagues. If you and your friend both have a webcam, you can also use video chat, which allows you to see each other as you talk. Rather than finding out if your webcam works with Skype during a call, which can be frustrating to both parties, Skype offers a tool for testing your webcam to ensure functionality.
Open Skype and log in to your account.
Click "Tools" and select "Options."
Click "Video Settings" in the General section. If your webcam works, it should display a live video of yourself in the Video Settings section.
- If your webcam does not work, make sure it is properly connected to your computer, is not obstructed and is enabled; some computers have a key that toggles the webcam on or off.
- Close any programs that could be using your webcam, including browsers, video editing software, other chat programs and Windows Explorer.
- If you still cannot see yourself in Skype's Video Settings window, disconnect the webcam and reconnect it. You may need to restart your computer.
