How to Update iTunes on a PC

by Kammy Pow

ITunes patches and updates are a vital component in managing and safeguarding your Apple mobile device. ITunes manages all aspects of your Apple experience, from purchasing applications and storing music and movies to backing up the content of your iPhone, iPad or iPod. Updates provide important bug fixes that improve the stability and performance of the software, as well as support new features so you can continue to enjoy the latest application releases. You can update iTunes by manually downloading and installing the updates, configuring iTunes to automatically receive and install each update or by using Apple Software Update.

Check for Manual Updates of iTunes Software

Open iTunes on your computer using the desktop icon or by going to the Start button, navigating to "All Programs" and then selecting "iTunes" from the iTunes folder.

Open the "Help" menu and choose "Check for Updates." If a new version of the software exists, the program displays the following dialog: "A new version of iTunes is available. Would you like to download it now?" Click on the "Download iTunes" button to begin installation.

Click on the "Install" button when the Apple Software Update dialog appears or when the software download page opens. Follow the on-screen instructions to install the software. Once completed, click "Yes" to shut down and restart the computer.

Configure iTunes to Receive Automatic Updates

Open iTunes using the desktop icon or by going to the Start menu, navigating to "All Programs" and then clicking on "iTunes" from the iTunes folder.

Click on the "Edit" menu and select "Preferences." Choose "Check for updates automatically" under the "General" section and then click on the "OK" button to apply the changes and exit the current dialog box. ITunes will check to see if an updated software package exists. Click on "Yes" if iTunes displays a dialog indicating "A new version of iTunes is available. Would you like to download it now?"

Choose "Yes" to shut down and restart the computer after the program has finished copying and installing files to the computer.

Use Apple Software Update to Download and Install iTunes Updates

Begin at the Start button. Navigate to "All Programs" and choose "Apple Software Update." Apple Software Update will open and display a list of software updates available for your computer.

Click on the "Install" button to allow the computer to download and install the selected updates.

Choose "Yes" to shut down and restart the computer after the program has finished copying and installing files.

Tip

  • Some updates of the iTunes software will prompt you to reconfigure your library. Quit iTunes. Hold down the "Shift" key and select "All Programs | iTunes | iTunes" from the Start menu. When the "Choose Library dialog appears, select "Choose Library" and browse to the directory containing your files.
